I cannot for the life of me figure out what the best venue for an art teacher is. It seems that everyone is on facebook these days, including me. I want the site to be accessible to everyone but I also want it to be super easy to post pictures to, as that is after all my main purpose for a school site. It is difficult on a blog to do day-by-day play-by-play posts. If I use facebook there is no access at school. Do I drag everything home and do it?
These are the questions I am struggling with.
I will let you know how it goes...Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-59178391424987996772010-01-25T10:18:00.000-08:002010-01-25T10:22:05.270-08:00Yet another student teacherIt seems that the only time I truly can add anything to this blog is when I have a student teacher. Today the projector that we use with the smartboard decided to blow its bulb. So.... the poor guy has to kick it old school and use an overhead projector with transparencies of the artworks. It is working fine but I feel sort of sorry for him. The good news is that I can get all my computer work done, including updating the blog. Keep an eye here as I will be posting quite a few pictures in the next few days.Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-35426394648774321772009-05-22T05:32:00.001-07:002009-05-22T05:38:04.297-07:00I am humbled by the events of the last few weeks. I was nominated for an Outstanding Educator Award by my peers. The banquet was held last night for retirees and to announce the winners. Low and Behold I WON! Being in the spotlight is not something I am incredibly comfortable with. I know I know I am one of the loudest, silliest people around but truly when it comes to my professional accomplishments it is hard for me to hear. I do the things I do as an educator so that my students learn, have fun, and of course appreciate art. When I won this award I truly wished that I could make one for all of my students. They are the ones who push me forward and make me want to be a better educator. This website was mentioned in the speech a colleague made about me last night. I chuckled to myself because I have not updated it in nearly 2 years. Well, here I am to say, I'M BAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-1156727415078504742006-08-27T18:05:00.000-07:002006-08-27T18:10:15.090-07:00New School YearAs I start to set up for this new year I find myself looking forward to it. In years past I had as much anxiety as many of my students. However, switching to choice has really changed how I and my students view the art studio. It truly has become a place for the students to express themselves. I have finished most of the room preparations and unloaded boxes and boxes of supplies. A new feature this year will be the mini-centers. This is a shelf of totes which contain all of the materials to complete a fun, relevant lesson. Also new this year are sketchbooks which all students will embellish on their first trip to art. We will be using these each week to take notes and jot down any ideas we may have. Of course it is a great place to put sketches of potential projects and take notes on successes and even failures.
I will post pictures as soon as the room is 100 percent!Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-1139250370853475672006-02-06T10:10:00.000-08:002006-02-06T10:26:10.866-08:00Our Student Teacher

Ms. Peggy Halbig has joined us. I ordered 30 rolls of packing tape thinking I'd have a class or two bring in a stuffed animal to sculpt. Well, I hadn't got around to it yet. A few students who come in at recess to work asked if I had any ideas for their next project... The rest is History. Here are the works in progress. I have started a quote board with these comments. Most students are willing to write down what they have said and even sign their name. We have a student from UT who has been observing us once a week. She will be student teaching in January and February here at Jackman. I'll post more information on her soon. Choice has been going phenominally well. My 5-7 minute presentations go on too long at times, but no one complains. Thanks kids! We are running out of supplies pretty quickly. It's amazing how quickly you can go through hundreds of toilet paper tubes! Sewing has been incredibly popular this last month. My challenge is getting them to understand the idea of creating a piece of art using the sewing items. Ted has done a great job using scraps of felt to create this pillow.
Tempera paint is still a favorite and one center which is a challenge. I try to stress the importance of having a plan prior to painting. However, how can I not let an ambitious student just go for it? I have recently gotten some great texts and the "new" concept in them is encouraging creativity in our students and how it helps them in the academic content areas (duh). We art teachers have been trying to communicate this fact for years. More on that later. Here is more art from my exceptionally creative students!
A very colorful portrait using tempera paint.
Chinese red envelopes are given at New Year's for good luck (with money inside). We used various paint tools to add texture and an eraser to take paint off. I loved when I pulled the paper off and the kids went ooooooh (every single class). I am sure my neighboring teachers were wondering what I was doing. Good thing for me that they like using sponges to clean as much as they like making the mess. Of course we are still emphasizing line in art. We will be moving on to shape next. We discussed line and how an artist uses it in their artwork. The fourth graders also studied the process of sketching and how it is a record of ideas that may or may not turn into a full-fledged piece of artwork. One of our fourth grade teachers came a little early and was able to see choice in action. I dare say that she really liked what she saw. The seasonal weave has been a hit with a certain group of young gentlemen (you know who you are!). I think they are determined to get the fall weave done before fall even gets here!Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-1125530178299323932005-08-31T16:06:00.000-07:002005-09-26T17:52:32.770-07:00New Centers

This is so fun! I introduced collage, watercolor, and stamping to the 1st and 2nd graders. It went relatively smoothly, surprisingly. As you can tell from the pictures there were major messes while the students worked but they did a great job cleaning up.Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-1125085191813484192005-08-26T12:36:00.000-07:002005-08-26T12:39:51.816-07:00Week one is overThis was only a 3 day week and I am glad to be done. It was however a great week. It's just hard to get back into the swing of things. I was at my second school today. They are a pretty nice group of kids and all seem to be excited about choice. I only introduced the drawing center this week. The texture plates were a hit, even with the 6th graders.
Next week is a full week of school. I'll be introducing more centers on wednesday. Wish me luck.!Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-1124919828716154432005-08-24T14:37:00.000-07:002005-08-24T16:05:16.700-07:00First dayHere is an abstract folder design from a sixth grade student. My Students are completely revved up about it. My room is immaculate (no new centers unless this one is clean). They can't wait to open more centers! We are making our folders and they are enjoying decorating them to their liking using only drawing media.

The fifth graders did a journal writing excercise after art, here's an excerpt from one of my favorites:

"It was fun, it wasn't boring to me because I enjoy art. I love art. I live on art. Everyday I have to draw something it is just so fun. Art. Art. We had a very nice turn out. I am pretty excited about starting choice tomorrow. I am going to do portfolios using the drawing center items with all classes after introducing the concept of centers and going over a few basic rules. The students who visited my room tonight highly approved of the changes I've made. I'll try to take pictures of our first day.Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-1124748797398967412005-08-22T14:59:00.000-07:002005-09-14T08:31:16.880-07:00Here are more picturesMy desk, as viewed from the door looking left. I did however remember the staple gun for the custodian. The room is looking better and I think I have a good handle on what I am going to do this week. I had a pretty bad dream about my first class though. Hopefully it was not prophetic! In the dream my room was not very feng shui (so I new there was something wrong). I am very big into feng shui and its effects in the art room. But, that is off topic. Backt to the dream. After I dismissed the students to do their work mass chaos reigned and I had to give 4 students behavior marks. I rarely give one... I think I am worrying too much.
I have rambled long enough for tonight.Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-1124395107523833592005-08-18T12:53:00.000-07:002005-08-19T11:18:06.096-07:00setting up the centersWell folks I started physically moving things. I set up the room today with the tables in their correct spots for centers. I plan to introduce all of the drawing materials with a folder/portfolio "project" so that thay have somewhere to store their works in progress. I sorted all of the other materials on hand into their respective centers, although right now the materials are on carts. I have a lot of rearranging to do before I can give the items more permanent homes.

If I feel daring I may introduce the 3-d construction center the first day also. My 9 year old son
tested it out today and made a giraffe in a cage, very out of his normal realm of comfort
(with zero prompting from me!). That got me so excited to see what my students will create.
For those of you interested in what I have put at each station I used the following site as a guideline.
http://sugarcreek.newpal.k12.in.us/choice3/centers.htm

I should have some pictures up tomorrow, If I remember the camera.Kittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15534355.post-1124335225842607182005-08-17T20:11:00.000-07:002005-08-17T20:20:25.846-07:00making the transition to choiceI have decided to convert the art classroom into a choice studio. What on earth is a choice studio you ask? Well, in a nutshell it is a way of "teaching" that enables students to choose between a variety of centers in the art room to communicate their own creative visions. Essentially the choice studio enables children to think and work like artists. They have full access to many different art materials at once. Just like in a real artist studio. If you are interested in a more in depth discussion I have included a few links for your reading enjoyment. I will be posting updates as I make this very exciting transition.
http://knowledgeloom.org/practices3.jsp?location=1&bpinterid=1357&spotlightid=1357
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/TAB-CHOICE.htmKittyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02419455537454291653noreply@blogger.com0
